She began her life in 1929 in Winter Garden, Florida during a time when most people were focused on securing the basic necessities. Her father died when she was six years old, leaving her mother to raise three children through the Depression with the meager income from a home she had turned into a boarding house. Many interesting characters and stories passed through that house as she grew up, building a steadfast foundation in her character that allowed her to move through good times and bad with the grace that defined her.
While academically and professionally accomplished, she ultimately built her adult life around a great romance, working hard together with the man she loved to generate happiness and memories that would span generations. As in her childhood, the home they created together would welcome all kinds of interesting people to pass through and share their lives, most returning again and again to enjoy her hospitality and southern charm.
She reserved her deepest feelings for her family, watching with bittersweet pride as they spread out and built their own lives. Grace would always keep the door wide open to welcome them whenever they could return, steadfastly maintaining a home where they could pick right back up as if they had never left and the relationships that really mattered were always waiting.
The love of her life, Cy Hawn, preceded her in death by 13 years, but the continued visits of friends and family to her home kept meaning in her life that sustained her. She remained a tough woman until the end, stubbornly waiting with her beloved caregiver for the next visit from friends and family.
The family intends to recognize the life of Grace Hawn around her birthday in April 2021 at her resting place beside Cy in Evergreen Memorial Park, hopefully when conditions allow friends to gather and remember her together.
Grace is survived by one younger brother, four children, eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations in her honor be made to the Athens-Clarke Public Library (www.athenslibrary.org)
