David Roderick Sandman, 69, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2026, in Carrollton, GA. Born October 21, 1956, in Hillsboro, Wisconsin, David leaves behind a legacy defined by service, kindness, and a deep devotion to the people he loved. Though his passing brings profound sorrow, his life also leaves an enduring lift in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
David grew up in SW Atlanta and later East Point, GA, and he always held a special love for Wellsville, spending many summers there with cousins—times he considered “the best times of his life.” He remained especially close throughout his life to cousins Kathy Brownell and Bonnie Schettine, bonds that spoke to his loyalty and the value he placed on family and lifelong connection.
David dedicated eight years of his life to honorable military service—four years in the United States Marine Corps, followed by four years in the United States Navy. During his naval service, he served aboard the USS Nimitz and the USS El Paso, and earned the distinction of serving as a Navy SEAL. His commitment reflected a quiet strength and steady courage that never needed to announce itself to be felt.
Away from the uniform, David was the kind of man people counted on—dependable, generous, and ready to help without hesitation or fanfare. He could bring levity to a room with quick wit, and just as easily offer the steady presence of someone who truly listened. He had a way of making people feel seen and valued, and it was hard to be around him without smiling.
David’s greatest joy was his beloved wife, Jan Sandman, who preceded him in death in 2016. Together, Jan and David built a beautiful life in Palmetto, GA—one filled with laughter, shared dreams, and the simple, lasting peace of time spent by the pond behind their home, a sanctuary that held some of their most cherished moments. Many take comfort in the thought that David is now reunited with Jan, the love of his life, their devotion made whole again.
He also found joy in the interests that rounded out his days: golfing, fishing, and a deep love of history among many other pursuits—curiosities that reflected a mind engaged with both the present moment and the stories that shaped the world.
David was the son of Robert W. Sandman and Marian Ruth (Fish) Sandman. In addition to his wife, Jan Sandman, he was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his sister, Patricia A. Foster of VA; brother in law, John M. Foster (Cherie) of Newnan, GA; nephew, Mike Foster of Cumming GA (Holly); and niece, Mandy Chase (Bill) and her children Lily and Laura Davis of VA.
David’s circle of love extended well beyond family. Mr. Gordon Stephens (Kathy) was David’s very dear and lifelong friend beginning in childhood, and David considered Gordon’s children, Alyson and Lauren, as his own pride and joy—cherishing them and being cherished in return. Also included among those who loved him is his caregivers, Candis and Andre Guzman of Carrollton GA, who cared for him and provided great comfort in their home during his final weeks.
David will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered—honored for his service, treasured for his loyalty, and held close for the kindness he gave so freely. May his memory be a blessing, and may he rest in eternal peace.
