Andy was preceded in death by his parents, Georgianna Hansen and Andrew Marshall Hansen Sr.; his brother, Edward Hansen; and his twin sisters, Elizabeth Hill and Barbara Teegarden. He is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret Bryan Hansen; his children, Andrew Bryan Hansen (Kathryn) and their children, Homer and Esther; Laura Hansen McEwen (Jason) and their children, Amelia and Bryan; and John Alexander “Jack” Hansen (Lori) and their daughter, Sadie; as well as his brother-in-law, Hudson Bryan (Anita). Andy will be deeply missed by his family, of whom he was so proud.
He was born in Las Vegas, NM on November 20, 1939, "the year Bugs Bunny was born," to Georgianna and Andrew Hansen. As a child growing up during WWII, his much older siblings and father were involved in the wartime effort.
Growing up, Andy moved throughout Western America as part of a family in the SantaFe Railroad Company. He went to high school in Topeka, Kansas and then enlisted in the US Navy. Following his military service, he attended and graduated from the University of Iowa as a student-athlete, competing in collegiate-level swimming and earning degrees in Business Administration and English.
Working for CNA Insurance led him to meet his future wife of nearly 60 years, Margaret, in New Orleans, LA. They later wed in Tupelo, MS. Through his successful career in life insurance marketing, Andy and Margaret made homes in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago, Raleigh, Austin, and Kansas City as parents. They then moved to Atlanta to fulfill their final and most important role: as grandparents. They created lifelong friendships and relationships on their journeys, many of which are still as strong as when they began.
As a member and Elder of the Presbyterian Church, he served his community and participated in mission trips that brought him great joy.
A man with a big laugh and a big heart, Andy’s greatest pleasure was cooking for his friends and family standing at the head of the table giving a toast or a prayer preferably wearing a Kansas City Chief’s shirt.
Andy’s impact on everyone he encountered along his life’s journey was massive. He was a mentor to many, including his neighbors, colleagues, children’s friends and church friends. His unparalleled personality was one that could not be forgotten. Andy was a story-teller and his unmistakable laugh could make any good story better.
After being asked to describe himself in one word, he confidently answered, "blessed."
"A Toast to Andy" will be held from 2-5 p.m. on June 13, 2026, in the North Woods Pavillion at the Dunwoody Nature Center, 5343 Roberts Dr. Dunwoody, GA 30338. Casual attire recommended. Be ready for Georgia summer heat.
An open microphone will be available for loved ones to share special memories of Andy. New Orleans cuisine mixed with Danish “hygge” will be provided to honor Andy and Margaret's journey together.
"Andy was larger than life. As a friend, he was funny, kind-hearted, and supportive. As a husband, father, and grandfather, he was a rock. He will be missed by many."
