Randy was born April 4,1945 in Houston, Texas to Abraham Lincoln Bullard, Jr. and Francess Long Bullard. His mom once told me that she often wanted to trade him for a new set of pots and pans. He must have been a stinker because his childhood friends just chuckle when certain topics come up in conversation. Perhaps they all signed a pledge of secrecy.
Randy attended Condit Elementary School, Lanier Junior High School, and graduated from San Jacinto High School. He attended South Texas Junior College and earned his Bachelor’s degree from Lamar University, He earned his Master’s degree and Doctor of Juris Prudence from Texas Southern University. From there, he taught in Alief ISD, Houston ISD, and Brazosport Junior College.
But his most important “career” was the years he gave to West University Little League. He was a coach, umpire, and mentor to literally thousands of young people. The League named a field, Randy Bullard Field, to honor him. He would say, “At least it doesn’t say ‘Randy Bullard Memorial Field’.”
Randy was a charter member of the West University Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He seldom missed a Thursday morning breakfast meeting. He never missed an opportunity to barbecue for any fund-raising event. He truly believed it was his mission in life to serve others.
That mission to serve was God-given. Randy grew up at Central Church of Christ. After he married, he attended West University Church of Christ. He prepared breakfast every Sunday morning. Everything was home-made and nothing was ever left over!
Randy met Lynn Pregler in December 1968 in Houston. They married August 14,1970 at Westgate Church of Christ in Beaumont, Texas. They were blessed with their lovely daughter Dawn in 1971. She was named for Randy’s favorite song by the Four Seasons. They moved back to Houston to West University Place in 1973 where they have lived since. They worshipped at West University Church of Christ where they always occupied Pew 5. One Sunday, someone else was sitting in Pew 5. Randy’s “mission to serve” had to be restrained as he wanted to “serve” them another pew.
In March 2023, Randy moved to the Reserve at Braeswood. It was a difficult decision, but for his safety and continued care, it was necessary. Other than his family and close friends, no one loved him more than the caregivers and staff at the Reserve. To all of them, he would say “I love you.”
Randy is survived by his wife Lynn and daughter Dawn. His grandchildren, Taylor Jeter (Hudgens), Todd, and Tanner, will miss the man they affectionately called “Oscar’…and that is another story. He also leaves behind his sister Betti Cooper (James) and Judi Reynolds (George) and their families. He is also survived by his little tabby LuLu who misses her buddy.
Randy is pre-deceased by his parents and his brother Larry.
A Celebration of Randy’s Life will be held Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at 11:00 at West University Church of Christ 3407 Bissonnet, Houston, TX 77005 where Shawn Jones will officiate. For those unable to attend, join us at www.facebook.com/westuchurch
In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to the Reserve at Braeswood, 7800 N. Stadium Drive, Houston, TX 77030. The family cannot adequately express how deeply they love and thank all the caregivers for the extraordinary care and love they gave Randy.
We also want to thank Three Oaks Hospice who provided support to the Reserve and to Randy, Lynn, and their family.
"Tears are not a sign of weakness, but of power. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are the messengers of overwhelming grief, deep contrition, and unspeakable love."
