Carol Ann Conway, died peacefully at the age of 70 in Katy, Texas on September 24, 2020 at Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was born on October 28th 1949 in Brooklyn, New York to her parents Bruno and Rose Perri. She married Edward James Conway on February 19th, 1972 at the age of 22 in Union City, New Jersey. Carol graduated from high school in 1968 in Brooklyn. Edward and Carol met at Bear Stearns in Manhattan, New York, while both were pursuing their careers on Wall Street. Carol worked in the dividend department. She moved to Houston, Texas in 1976 where she pursued a career in collections at First City Bank and she finished her career in Chase Auto Finance for JP Morgan Chase. She met some life long friends there. Starr Chetney, Marchetta Woodley, Diane Johnson and Willie Wade she spoke fondly of the four of you often.
The two crowning achievements of her life were her children Edward and Keri. She loved her family unconditionally and lived to see her kids and grandkids every day. She had no strangers and made everyone feel welcome. She wore her heart on her sleeve. You always knew where you stood with her. Just ask anyone who knew her. She would feed you, comfort you and love you. She showed everyone kindness and unconditional love. Carol put every one before herself.
Carol had many hobbies. She loved to cook. A typical holiday consisted of a full Italian dinner starting at 10 am. We would wake up to her famous marinara sauce filled with homemade meatballs, Italian sausage, and braciola. 1st course was a small sausage parmesan sandwich as an appetizer. 2nd course: antipasto salad which consisted of at least 5 kinds of cheese, 5 different Italian meats, assorted peppers, olives, several kinds of greens and of course her famous stuffed mushrooms. Oil and vinegar only…. Do not even try to put ranch dressing on her antipasto salad!! Almost forgot her homemade sausage bread. No matter how many loaves she made they never made it past the appetizer round. I truly believe she was the original creator of chopped. That was all before 1pm. Now, on to the main course of the Italian holiday feast. Sometimes it was Manicotti… sometimes it was stuffed shells… sometimes it was lasagna… sometimes it was ravioli…. and other times it was baked ziti. Every time it was delicious and made with love. Well, the story does not end there…. On to dinner. At least it was simple. A full traditional American holiday. Turkey and Honey Baked Ham, stuffing, scalloped potatoes, green bean casserole and glazed carrots. Point of contention here… She loved liver and gizzards etc., but we all hated them but she insisted on “hiding” them in the stuffing. Year after year this was a playful argument and until this day, she swears that she did not put them in the stuffing. As she grew older, she became a big fan of the Food Network and watched it regularly. She spent many hours trying to recreate all of the amazing recipes.
She also loved to play bingo and spades. She loved to travel and she loved to make ceramics. Many of the ceramic statues and other pieces saw better days though. Keri, Brian Reagan and I broke many of them on many occasions and glued them back together so she wouldn’t notice. Finally, we were not able to piece them back together anymore so we had to tell her. Mom, “yes Edward,” we broke your statues today on accident. Mom: “were you playing catch in the house?” Edward: yes, Momma. Mom: “did y’all have fun?” Edward: yes, Momma. Mom: “well, don’t play in the house anymore and I will just make another one.”
Later in life she became Carnival Cruise Lines best customer. She found it so relaxing. It was next to impossible to get her on her first cruise, and even harder to get her off the boat thereafter.
She loved the Isle of Capri Casino and L’auberge du Lac or “La Birds” as she called it; their best customer for sure. She loved playing slot machines, especially the Blazing 7’s and Haywire machines. The Haywire machines were classic. She had never played them before and every once in awhile they would go “Haywire” and spin and payout, spin and payout in some sort of sequence. She thought the machine was broken or she was cheating. She wanted to leave the casino immediately because she thought she was going to go to jail or get in trouble.
She also loved music and attended many concerts as part of the casino’s VIP programs.
Her most important hobby though was spending time with her family. Especially her kids and grandkids. Ashlee and Nathan, Granny loved you passionately. Granny also had extended grandkids via her favorite son in law, Juan, that she treated as her own. Gordo, Andres and Gabi she loved passionately as well. All of you are her living legacy. Live the way she would have wanted you to live. Enjoy life, love your family and do everything to the best of your ability.
She is survived by her husband Edward, her children Edward and Keri, her grandchildren Ashlee, Nathan, Gordo, Andres and Gabi and her pets Roxy and Ruby.
She was preceded in death by her parents Bruno and Rose Perri, her in laws Francis and Catherine Conway, Uncle Don and Aunt Mae Williamson, son in law Juan Moreno, sister in law Carol Falco, brother in law Bobby Falco, her best friend Mary Anderson and pets Blackie, Puppy, Bear, Pongo and Lu Lu.
