March 1, 1938 – October 29, 2026
Janos (John) Eder, 88, of Trinity, Florida, passed away on October 29, 2026 leaving behind a legacy of courage, determination, adventure, and deep love for his family.
Born in Budapest, Hungary, John experienced the hardships of war and its aftermath at an early age. In 1956, at just 18 years old, he escaped Hungary during the revolution and began a new life in America. His journey first took him to Joplin, Missouri, and then to Minnesota, where he would build a life and family of his own.
In 1959, John married Solweig (Sue), and together they raised their daughters, Jennifer and Nancy, in North St. Paul, Minnesota. John and Sue were a team through life’s joys and challenges, including the heartbreaking loss of their daughter Nancy in 1984. They later retired to Pequot Lakes, Minnesota, where they enjoyed the beauty of lake life together until Sue’s passing in 2003.
Strong-willed and determined, John was a man of firm opinions, boundless curiousity and a lifelong desire to learn. John loved history, biographies, spirited conversation, and a good game of Trivial Pursuit – especially when he won. He enjoyed great food and wine, golf, dancing, and staying active. From skiing and swimming with his daughters to playing in the pool with his great-grandchildren, he passed along his enthusiasm for an active, adventurous life.
In his later years, John found love and companionship with Carolyn Rankin. Together, they traveled the world, collecting experiences, memories, and pins on the map that marked their many adventures. Their shared love of travel made this a rich and memorable chapter of his life.
Above all, John took immense pride in his family. Their accomplishments and happiness meant the world to him, and he delighted in watching the generations that followed him grow and thrive.
In a final act of generosity, John donated his liver, while other organs were donated to advance medical research. Even in death, his life continues to make a difference.
John is survived by his life partner, Carolyn Rankin; daughter Jennifer Jepsen (Ole Jepsen); grandson Brian D. Baker (Rita Baker); bonus granddaughters Ida and Katrine; great-grandchildren Clara and Norby Baker; and sister Martha Olson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Solweig Eder, and daughter, Nancy Eder.
A memorial service honoring John’s life will be held on Friday, November 13, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church of Seven Springs, followed by a Celebration of Life at Heritage Country Club in Trinity, Florida, from noon to 2:00 p.m. All who knew John are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Humane Society of Jacksonville; Florida.
His was a life shaped by hardship, strengthened by determination, enriched by adventure, and filled with love. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
