A MESSAGE FROM THE FAMILY
Donald Ray Bates, 88, went home to be with his Lord on February 11th, 2023. Don was born on December 24th, 1934 in El Dorado, AR. He graduated from El Dorado High School and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Arkansas. He moved to the St. Petersburg area after graduation to work for Honeywell where he spent his entire career, retiring as the Director of Engineering. Don was a man of many interests and hobbies. He loved all types of sports, and he especially loved the water; fishing, water skiing, diving, and sailing. He could fix or make almost anything, including furniture and his own cast net. He was a man of few words. When he talked, you listened. He was a great storyteller and had a quick wit. Don and his wife Faye were married for 36 years. Together they enjoyed traveling, playing tennis, boating, enjoying concerts and theatrical performances, and spending time with their family and many friends. They loved each other truly and deeply. Most importantly, Don made faith in Jesus Christ the center of his life and his home. The discipline and decisions in his home were based on faith. He was firm, yet forgiving; and went out of his way to love and care for others. He was a man of true integrity. Don is survived by his wife Faye Bates, daughter Linda Bates Bayless (Randy), son Donald A. Bates (Jill), stepdaughter Jill Macpherson, brother Joe Bates, sisters Patsy Bates Zylks and Jean Bates Harris, and grandchildren Brandon Bayless, Jonathan Bates, Em Bates and Ian Macpherson. He is preceded in death by daughter Ruth Bates Duncan. We will miss him dearly, but rest assured in our faith that he is peacefully in the arms of his loving Savior. Celebration of Life Service: Saturday, March 4th, 2:00 PM First Baptist Church St. Petersburg. 1900 Gandy Blvd N, St. Petersburg, FL
