Craig was born on June 22, 1949, to Sturbridge, MA residents Philip H. Lyman, Sr. who passed away in
1996 and Barbara Hollis Lyman who passed away in 1988. He was predeceased by his eldest brother Philip H. Lyman, Jr. of Ilion, NY in 2008 and youngest brother Carl R. Lyman of Woodstock, CT in 2017.
In his youth, while growing up on Big Alum Lake in Sturbridge, MA, Craig developed a close relationship with Mother Nature and began drawing and painting at an early age. He was very interested in reading novels, learning about philosophy, journaled many of his deepest thoughts and adventures, was a well trained sportsman in firearms and archery, enjoyed water and snow skiing and flying kites. Craig also loved old western movies and spent a number of years participating in local community live theater projects.
After attending New England School of Art in 1968, he began attending Boston Architectural Center in 1970 and the next year headed west for an apprenticeship to live/work with The Cosanti Foundation while pouring some of the reinforced concrete foundation at Paolo Soleri’s progressive urban planning concept called “Arcosanti - The World’s first Arcology prototype” in the Arizona Desert. He eventually returned to Boston Architectural Center, earning a Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1983 but much of his lifes’ work and philosophy was inspired by his time at Arcosanti and is evident throughout the various buildings he designed across New Mexico, New England and Florida. Some of his work over the years included the United Methodist Church in Angel Fire, NM, The Ugly Duckling in Sturbridge, MA, Cohasse Country Club in Southbridge, MA, The Village Racquet Club in Sturbridge, MA, the “Riverwalk” portion of the “Grand Trunk Trail” in Sturbridge, MA, the renovations to Faxon Chicken Farm, turning it into the Lycott Environmental Laboratory and apartment complex in Southbridge, MA, plus various school buildings and private residences that utilized alternative, off-grid, solar and green based technologies.
Most recently, upon his move to Florida in 2019, he became the Project Manager at Suncoast Architect Studio in Spring Hill, FL.
There will be no services for Craig at this time but a private ceremony will be scheduled around the 2021
Summer Solstice.
