John D. Stubbs Jr., age 67, died unexpectedly on Saturday, November 16, 2019. John was born on October 20, 1952 in Lima, Ohio. He was raised in Kentfield, Ca, and in 1976 graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a BS in Economics. John was talented with numbers and intended to become an Actuary with an insurance company. While he was employed as a stock market analyst for the James Dines Company, John received devastating news that he was afflicted with schizophrenia. John moved to Houston to be near family where he lived the remainder of his life. Through persistence, medication, faith in God, loyal friends, his church and family, John had an active and meaningful life. He was a sacker at Randalls for 10 years until his illness forced him to retire. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, volunteered to feed the homeless, counseled inmates and played dominoes with residents at nursing homes. For the last 3 years John lived at the Treemont Retirement Home where he enjoyed the community and warm welcome he received there. He was an avid sports fan and looked forward to the super bowl every year. He enjoyed watching football games at Stratford High School, playing chess with his nieces and nephew and having meals with friends and family. His periodic visits to Colorado were a highlight.
He is preceded in death by his parents John and Josephine Stubbs. He is survived by his brother Robert Stubbs, niece Vanessa, and Robert’s wife Margarita, his sister Barbara Skelton, and her husband Larry and their children Michael, Robin and Sarah.
There will be a Funeral Mass at St. Cyril of Alexandria Catholic Church, 10503 Westheimer Rd., Houston, TX 77042 on Tuesday December 10th at 4 PM in the chapel. The family would also like at this time to thank the Senior Allegiance nurse, Dina Gudas, who visited with John once a week and provided counseling and encouragement. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to St. Cyril of Alexandria Catholic Church or to The Harris Center for Mental Health, www.theharriscenterfoundation.org , in memory of John.
