Sonia was born in Brooklyn, New York, on July 21, 1934. She was the eldest of two daughters born to Vasile Persano and Asta Muhl. She grew up in Brooklyn before moving with her family to Morristown, New Jersey, where she graduated from Morristown High School in 1952. She went on to study French at DePauw University in Indiana.
Sonia lived in New York City, where she met her first husband, Morry Seiden, while working as a stewardess for United Airlines in the late 1950s. Together they raised three daughters, first living in Southern California and later relocating to Larchmont, New York.
In 1988, Sonia married Thomas Schutrick. Together they shared an active, full, and loving life, eventually settling in Spring Hill, Florida, where they lived happily for nearly 30 years. They enjoyed visiting their children and grandchildren, playing tennis, playing cards with friends, and traveling extensively. Their favorite destination was the Caribbean. They especially loved cruising and embarked on more voyages than anyone could count.
Sonia will be remembered for her beautiful smile, spirited personality, sense of humor, and zest for life. Whether you had known her for years or had only just met her, she had a remarkable ability to make you feel comfortable, valued, and welcome. She could turn a stranger into a friend within minutes. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
Sonia is survived by her younger sister, Ingrid; her three daughters, Lisa Sullivan (Chuck Sullivan), Laura Carvalho (John Carvalho), and Linda Blanchard (Bob Blanchard); her six grandchildren, Andrew Sullivan (Valentina Bisconti Sullivan), Matthew McGirney, Kevin Carvalho (Jennifer Carvalho), Katie McGirney, Lauren Luu (Brian Luu), and Andrew McGirney; her nephew, Steven Strange; and her twin daughters, Dori and Debra, who were born prior to her first marriage. She is also fondly remembered by Tommy and Charlie Schutrick, the sons of Thomas Schutrick.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her nephew, Christopher Strange; and her beloved husband, Thomas Schutrick.
The family will hold a private burial and a simple celebration of life to honor Sonia's memory.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Sonia's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
