the age of 95. Jean was born in Lafayette, Indiana on Feb 26, 1927 to Phillip and Ruth
Pearson as the second of three girls. She enjoyed going to school and graduated from
Hammond Vocational Technical School in 1945. After high school she got a job with American
States Insurance Company in Indiana. Also during this time, Jean helped her sister, Phyllis,
raise a set of twins, George and Gerri - which was a full time but gratifying job in itself!
Unfortunately, Jean contracted tuberculosis in 1954 and eventually had to have a lung removed
in 1955. She endured a very long, 18 month rehabilitation at a sanatorium in Crown Point,
Indiana. Jean couldn’t wait for the day to get released and reconnect with family, so she had a
strong will to persevere and enjoy living. Her initial position with the insurance company turned
into an extremely rewarding life-long career. She was able to travel with her co-workers to
places like Hawaii, The Bahamas, Mexico and other warm destinations. It was the mid ‘80s
when Jean finally retired as the Sales Representative for Marketing for Northwest Indiana.
After retiring, Jean followed a good friend’s lead and relocated to the gulf side of Florida. She
welcomed with open arms countless family members and friends to come and stay with her.
She enjoyed sewing and crafts, communicating with family and friends long distance and
making greeting cards for others using her computer or iPad, and going to 4th of July picnics
in the park to listen to patriotic music. At Christmas time she frequently visited family in
Colorado. A favorite of Jeans was meeting friends for lunch or dinner and also driving over to
her beach to watch the sunset.
In her most recent years, Jean was very adept at using her iPad on a daily basis to FaceTime
with her younger sister, Beverly, and her sister’s grandchildren and great grandchildren from
Michigan. Jean also enjoyed listening to sermons each Sunday that were broadcast from
LifeBridge Church in Longmont, Colorado.
Jean is survived by her sister, Beverly S. Phelps of Michigan, nephews Doug Hartzler (Tina) and
David Hartzler both of Michigan, George Fulka (Lori) of Colorado, and numerous grand-nieces
and grand-nephews. Jean was preceded in death by her older sister Phyllis Fulka, nieces Dr.
Gerri Peper and Linda Breault.
