She was born August 17, 1942, in Detroit, Michigan, to Joseph Donald Cooper and Ann (Segger) Cooper. Nellie grew up on Detroit’s west side and carried a lifelong spirit of service, community, and creativity.
A proud Girl Scout and first-generation college graduate, she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Wayne State University. In 1964, she married the love of her life, George Austin Baldwin, and together they shared more than six decades of devoted partnership.
Nellie embraced many roles throughout her life, including teacher, stay-at-home mom, and later Human Resources professional at Adistra and GE Plastics. She was an avid reader and creative spirit who loved painting, music, gardening, games, and cooking for those she loved. The Cottage on Lake Charlevoix was central to her life, as was travel, time with friends, long walks and bike rides with George, and making memories with family.
A woman of deep Christian faith, Nellie was a longtime member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Plymouth. She faced illness with grace, resilience, and enduring hope.
Nellie was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Irene (Cooper) Thomas. She is survived by her husband, George Baldwin; her daughters, JoAnn Baldwin Glenn (Terrence) and Barbara Baldwin Lund (Michael); her grandchildren, Katie and Adam; and many extended family members and dear friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held May 9. Please contact JoAnn or Barb for details
