Michael Medwid, age 80, of West Bloomfield, passed away peacefully at his home on June 10, 2026. He leaves behind a legacy of resilience, entrepreneurial success, and a lifelong passion for competitive sailing.
Born in Detroit on December 22, 1945, Michael was the son of Stephan Medwid and Mary Romanow. He faced immense adversity early in life, losing his father at just two years old. Following a violent automotive union strike, Stephan was severely beaten and tragically passed away shortly thereafter from an aneurysm. Only four years later, when Michael was six, his mother developed a mental illness and could not care for him anymore. Despite these profound losses, he was raised with deep love and care by his aunt and uncle. These early hardships ultimately forged an unbreakable determination within Michael.
In 1971, Michael founded Three M Tool & Machine. Through his visionary leadership and hard work, he built a highly successful manufacturing company, serving as its president for 49 years until his well-deserved retirement in 2020.
When not working, Michael was almost always found traveling the world, walking the golf course, or out on the water enjoying his boats. An avid and accomplished sailor, he was a proud member of both the Bayview Yacht Club and the Edgewood Country Club. Over the years, he skillfully captained his two beloved yachts, EZ Money and Notso EZ Money. As a fixture in the Midwest sailing community, Michael competed in numerous Bayview Mackinac Races and completed the grueling, non-stop Super Mackinac race from Chicago to Port Huron. His exceptional talent on the water was undeniable, earning him multiple first-place finishes in single-handed sailing races on Lake St. Clair.
Michael’s greatest joy, however, was his family. He is survived by his children: Matthew Medwid, Michelle (Bob) Nelson, and Sam Medwid. He was the proud grandfather of Rachel (Joey), Jack, and Max, and the adoring great-grandfather of Sawyer and Jacqueline. Michael is also survived by his deeply devoted partner, Susan Britton Hummel, whose steadfast love and care remained by his side until the very end.
