James Pearson Grant passed away on June 2, 2025 at The Cortland Howell, 605 Pere Marquette, Howell, Michigan. Jim was born on June 6, 1932 in Fremont, Michigan, the first-born son of Charles Isaac Grant and Marie Jeanette Pearson Grant. He spent his school years K-11 in Muskegon, Michigan before transferring to Larwill, Indiana for his Senior year. He graduated from Larwill High School Class of 1950.
He is predeceased by his wife of 74 years, Marjorie Lee Barney Grant. They met in their senior year of high school in Larwill, Indiana and married just 2 months after their graduation on August 6, 1950. He is survived by their three children, Cathy Jane Grant Jahn (Gary) of Richmond Hill, GA, James Michael Grant (Diana) of Howell, MI, and Kelly Marie Grant Burton of St Johns, MI.
Jim and Margie relocated back to Muskegon in 1951 and purchased a home in Lakeside, Muskegon, MI. Jim began his career in the beverage business working for the local Stroh’s Distributor. This began a lifelong career in sales. You name it, he could sell it. One of his favorites was Woodchuck Cider. He had everyone wearing Woodchuck jackets, t-shirts and hats. As he approached 50 years old, he started up his own business, Grant Sales and Marketing. He tried many lines, but found great success selling wine.
Jim wore many sporting hats throughout his life. Whatever the sport, he dove into it hook, line and sinker. He played catcher on the local softball team in his early years. He paid for that later when he had to have both knees replaced. He was an avid bowler and still enjoyed watching it on TV. He fished, he hunted, mostly with a bow and arrow. They went through a phase of snowmobiling and, of course, there was always golf. Golf…golf…golf.
In the summer of 1968 they moved to Lansing, MI and became members of the Grand Ledge Country Club. For almost 30 years their social life revolved around the country club. They had many friends and Dad loved the competition. When they retired in 1997, they took off for Florida in their 5th Wheel RV spending 6 months in Clermont, Florida and 6 months in Lansing. They later moved to Brooksville, FL where they lived full time until 2020 when they returned to Howell, MI. He has resided at The Cortland Howell the last 3 and a half years.
One brother is left to mourn Jim’s passing, Robert Charles Grant (Maggie) of Muskegon, MI and one sister Mardell Lynn Grant of Homosassa Springs, FL, sister-in-law’s Doris Ann Barney Longsworth of Auburn, IN and Vicki Lynn Barney Bruce of Richmond, VA also many nieces and nephews.
