

George “Ted” Derwa, age 87, of West Bloomfield, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 19, 2026 at Magnolias by the Lake in Keego Harbor. Born September 21, 1938 in Detroit, he was the son of George Derwa and Dorothy Leguria and brother of Jackie Start (late husband Michael).
Ted retired from Ford Motor Company in 1998 after 36 years as Senior Executive Director in IT. A mathematical genius with a quick wit and competitive spirit, Ted could add large numbers in his head in seconds and used that talent to dominate gin rummy and win many card tournaments. He hosted Christmas parties every year at Red Run Golf Club, where he was a proud member for over 20 years. He enjoyed winters at his home in Callaway Greens Golf Club in Fort Myers, Florida, where he loved to golf with his friends. Ted was known for his generosity, big laugh, and cheering on the Detroit Lions, Tigers, Pistons, and Red Wings. He was a loving dad, loyal friend and a proud grandfather.
He is survived by his children: Penny Eastman (Bob), Patrice Fink (Dan), Pam Steinberg (Barry), and Paula Schienke (David); grandchildren: Sarah Kennedy, Bobby Eastman, Teddy Eastman, Brandon McNeil, Alina Steinberg, Josh Schienke, Olivia Schienke, and Gabe Schienke; and great-grandchildren: Sally Mansfield and Molly Mansfield. He is also survived by his niece and godchild Michelle VanGilder (Brian) and nephew Danny Start (Samantha), who was like a son to him.
