

Diane Barbara Nowak was born in Toledo, Ohio to Richard and Molly Jacobs on the first of October, 1937. Both parents, her younger sister Monica Knight, and younger brother Mark preceded Diane in death. She is survived by her brother Richard Jacobs of Cumming, Georgia and sister, Patricia Newman of Temperance, Michigan. In 1972 Diane married John Nowak in Toledo and moved to Ann Arbor that same year. They have two sons, Nathan of Memphis, Tennessee who is married to Anna Bess Sorin; Andrew of Ann Arbor, Michigan, father of their grandchildren Tyler, Abigail, and Lyndon Nowak.
Diane was a secondary school teacher for over 40 years in Ohio and Michigan. After moving to Ann Arbor Diane began teaching at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, becoming the first principal of Father Gabriel Richard High School, Ann Arbor from 1977 to 1980. A Junior Olympic Equestrian in her early years, Diane was a lifelong lover of horses and fan of horse shows. Also a fan of U of M hockey. She was an avid gardener who visited gardens in the U.S. and Canada. Diane was a 40 year summer visitor to Prince Edward Island, which she loved for its beauty and the simplicity of the people. People remember her laugh and lovely, gentle smile. A thoughtful lady, friend, and teacher. Always upbeat, cheerful, and lively. She led an amazing life of service. Generous with her time. Her mentoring, encouragement and kindness was a source of strength, and hope for many. Students learned from her not just academics but life lessons anchored in respect and faith.
