Born on February 20, 1928, to Kathryn (Kay) and Floyd (Peter) Lyle in New York, NY, the family moved to Rutherford, NJ, and then ultimately to Radburn (Fair Lawn), NJ where Jane resided most of her life until at the age of 91, settled full time in Florida.
Jane had a passion for learning. She became the valedictorian of her graduating class at Fair Lawn High School. After that she attended Washington University, in St, Louis, Missouri, receiving a bachelor’s degree in architecture and later a master’s degree in urban planning from Columbia University. She had a part-time career as a city planner with The Planning Association of North Jersey, as well as serving for twenty years on the Fair Lawn Planning Board.
She married Neal Diepeveen on May 10, 1952. Jane introduced Neal to sailing which became a decades-long passion. Jane and Neal, friends and family had many sailing adventures in their home port of Long Island Sound and later cruised to far-flung places like Bermuda, Nova Scotia, Tahiti, and Greece.
Jane was civic-minded. She was active in the League of Women Voters of Fair Lawn and was the League president for many years. She was also the first Borough of Fair Lawn historian, and one of her accomplishments was saving the historic Cadmus House from demolition and helping establish it as a museum. She is the author of several books about her beloved town of Fair Lawn.
Predeceased by her husband Neal Diepeveen in 2023, Jane is survived by her daughter Laura D. Campbell and son Brian W. Diepeveen, her 5 granddaughters, and 5 great-grandchildren.
There will be a graveside service where she will be buried alongside her husband Neal, at the Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Rd 72, Sarasota, FL on July 26, 2024, at 9:30 am.
