Edith was born in New York, New York on September 8, 1913. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Hunter College in New York, and later went on to receive a Master of Science degree in education also from Hunter College.
Edith was married to the love of her life, John P. Fletcher, on August 10, 1943. They were married for 45 years before John passed away in March of 1989.
Edith was a devoted Kindergarten teacher for 26 years in Beacon, New York. She was a passionate educator with a big heart for teaching and always spoke of the joy her students brought her. She and her husband decided to move to Sarasota in 1982 after their retirement. Edith loved to do many things after her retirement including traveling, swimming, fishing with her husband, reading, playing cards and was an excellent seamstress. She also enjoyed Tai Chi, taking enrichment classes, and spending as much time as she could with her family and friends. She was also actively involved in her church serving as an usher and greeter and was a member of the altar guild and Daughters of the King.
Edith is survived by her son, John P. Fletcher Jr.(Rhea) of South Carolina; daughter, Meredith Fletcher of U.S. Virgin Islands; and Penny Fletcher Metz of Sarasota, FL; as well as grandchildren Elizabeth Metz Funk(Frank); Andrew Metz(Kate) of Sarasota, FL; John E. Fletcher(Monica) of Maryland, and Eric Fletcher(Angela) of New York and seven great grandchildren.
Edith is preceded in death by her parents Ethel Tomlinson Rink and Edward C. Rink, brothers Robert Rink and Edward Rink Jr., her husband John P. Fletcher Sr., and son-in-law Larry G. Metz.
Edith will be missed beyond measure by all her family and friends. Please join us in celebrating her extraordinary life!
A memorial service and internment of ashes will be held at St. Wilfred Episcopal Church 3773 Wilkinson Rd. Sarasota, FL 34233, on Saturday April 6th at 10:00 a.m. The Reverend Joyce Woolever Holmes will be officiating. Arrangements are being handled by the National Cremation and Burial Society in Sarasota. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Wilfred Episcopal Church.
