George Samuel Scherer

Obituary of George Samuel Scherer

George S. Scherer passed into Eternal life on August 4, 2025. He was born 10/19/1942 at Palmerton Hospital, Palmerton, PA and was the son of the late Mary (Drumheller) Scherer and Llewellyn Scherer. He was a graduate of LHS Class of 1960; and studied Ferrous Metallurgy at Penn State Extension.

He married Barbara (Zweifel) Scherer on April 27,1963 and they were married 62 years. Every day of their married life, he told his wife that he loved her and that she was beautiful! George proudly served in the US Navy 1960-1963, 3rd Class on the USS Independence. He and his wife enjoyed attending yearly Navy Reunions held in several different states. He retired from Bethlehem Steel Corp. after almost 30 years. He proudly served on the Honor Guard in Bethlehem, PA for Harry F. Johnson American Legion Post 379, and served 15 years as a volunteer at St. Luke’s Hospital where he received many accolades for his service. When their son David was a Cub Scout, George was the Den Leader. He and his wife were awarded “Parents of the Year” at Nazareth Senior High School for their participation in their children’s band functions. He also served as a Volunteer Fireman at Hecktown Fire Company for 8 years and was also their Treasurer.

He lived almost his entire life in the Bethlehem and Saucon Valley areas, but he and Barbara moved to Apollo Beach, Fl in 2015 to live out their final years in a warmer climate. He always said it was the best thing they ever did.

He loved being out in the sunshine and enjoying all the flowers he planted around their home. George enjoyed singing in the church choir and other choirs, such as the Zion Choral Society, Nazareth Community Chorus, and the Southshore Community Chorus in Florida. He loved gardening, fishing with his wife and son, traveling, and reading mystery novels. He and Barb traveled to 47 states in the USA, 37 countries, and enjoyed cruising to many islands in the Caribbean. He was a faithful member of Ruskin Methodist Church, past member of the Trustees, member of the Investment Team, sang in the choir, and past secretary of the Men’s Club. He was a member of the Pistol Team, and Veterans Group in his community George had a wonderful outgoing personality and was loved by many.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Barbara Zweifel Scherer, brother David Scherer in Florida, granddaughter Emma Scherer in Oklahoma, as well as grandsons Matthew and Connor Spering in Macungie, PA. He is also survived by their adopted son and daughter-in-law Matthew and Darcy Matchette. George was predeceased by the second love of his life, son David in 2023. A celebration of Life will be held at a later date at Ruskin Methodist Church. Contributions may be made to the church, 105 4th Ave. NW, Ruskin, FL 33570. He will be buried in Sarasota Memorial Cemetery along with his wife.
