

Born in Streator, Illinois on May 31, 1930, Charles Wesley lived a life marked by service, leadership, and dedication to his family and community. He proudly served in the United States Air force for four years during which he served in the Korean War as a tail gunner aboard a B-29 bomber, as part of the Strategic Air Command, SAC, which controlled the nation’s bombers, international ballistic missiles, and aerial refueling tankers, and his final year as a boom operator on a KC-97 air refueling B-47’s. Charles demonstrated his courage and commitment to country that remained hallmarks of his character throughout his life.
For 61 years, Charles called Collier County, Florida, home. He devoted most of his professional career to public education in the Collier County School System. Beginning as a principal in Everglades City, and continuing his principalship at Shadowlawn Elementary, he earned the respect of students, parents, and colleagues through his steadfastness and allegiance to educational excellence. He was later promoted to District Plant Planning where he oversaw the planning and construction of new schools throughout the district. His work helped accommodate the county’s growth and provided educational opportunities for generations of students.
Charles was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church and participated in the choir as a tenor soloist in Taylorville, Illinois for many years. Music was a huge part of his life and he continued to sing in church at the age of 95. He lived according to values of integrity, service, and compassion. He was known for his strong work ethic, quiet strength, and devotion to his family.
Charles loved the gift and eloquence of language and reserved each Thursday as his poetry day. Those who knew him looked forward to hearing his “reading of the day.” He will be remembered for his daily mantras of, “It’s a beautiful day,” “I don’t allow myself to have bad days,” and “You’ll feel better tomorrow.”
Charles is preceded in death by his wife of almost 66 years, Mary Lucinda Drake and his son, Douglas Drake, (Denise). He is survived by his children, Charles W. Drake, Jr., (Ellen Drake), Charla Drake-Oien, (Wayne Oien), and Rebecca Gubitti, (Steve Gubitti); and his grandson, Garret Oien.
