Born July 29, 1941, Ken was the second oldest of four boys—brothers Willie, George, and Tommy—and grew up in Montgomery, Alabama. Music shaped his early years in a lasting way: marching band and jazz band were central to his life, and he played trombone with pride and discipline. He carried a deep respect for the guidance he received from his band director, Johnny Long, and later continued his education at Auburn University, including his time with the Auburn Knights Jazz Band.
Ken built a grounded career, working first with the U.S. Air Force and later with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. As an electrical engineer in the communications department, he traveled extensively for work, bringing a careful, methodical approach and commitment. Those who knew him recognized a man who valued honesty, showed loyalty in enduring ways, and met life with the quiet strength of someone who never shied away from hard work.
A devoted sports fan, Ken especially loved anything connected to Auburn University—his alma mater and a lifelong source of pride. He was also a natural tinkerer, regularly working on and fixing things, guided by an intelligent curiosity and a detail-oriented mind that enjoyed learning about the world around him.
In later years, much of Ken’s time was devoted to caring for his adopted special needs children, a commitment that reflected the kind of person he was and wanted to see in others.
Ken is survived by his former wife of 20+ years, Mary Sue Shaffer; three sons, Kenneth Richard “Rich” Hammett Jr., Jay Arthur Hammett, and Eric Bradley Hammett; adopted daughter, Sherry Hammett Parker; adopted special needs children, Shawnee Hammett and Blake Hammett; grandchildren, Alex, Elise, Rachel, Jeremy, Spencer, Parker, Ella, Ian, Claire, Caroline, Isaac, and Nolan; and brothers, George Hammett and Tommy Hammett. Ken is also survived by many friends and extended family members who will cherish his memory.
Ken was preceded in death by his wife, Judith “Judy” Hammett; his adopted special needs daughter, Kimberly Hammett; and his brother, Willie Hammett.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 10, 2026, at 1:00 pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints - Chapel, 2083 Wesley Chapel Road, Decatur, Georgia 30035. Reception to Follow in the Cultural Hall.
