Betty J. Cook

Betty J. Cook, 87, of Arcadia, Florida, passed away on September 4, 2026. Born on August 15, 1939, she was raised in Miami, Florida, in a home shaped by steady devotion—her mother a homemaker and her father a city bus driver—and she carried that same grounded strength and bright spirit throughout her life.

Betty’s life was marked by movement, music, and the kind of joy that made ordinary moments feel lighter. She worked for the airlines for roughly 20–30 years, a fitting path for an avid traveler whose curiosity for the world never seemed to dim. Whether she was exploring new places or returning home, she brought with her an easy warmth and an uplifting presence that drew people in.

Over the years, Betty built a life rich in family and change—she married and had two children, later remarried, and moved to Tennessee before returning to Florida. In Arcadia, she became part of the local fabric through Abigail’s Antiques, where many would fondly recall Ms. Cook singing and line dancing behind the registers—an unforgettable glimpse of the lively, celebratory way she met each day.

She found happiness in simple, beautiful rituals: tending to her flower beds, spending time with her granddaughter, and heading outdoors whenever she could. She especially loved the water—fishing, snorkeling, and other water activities that matched her spirited, openhearted way of living.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, J.E. and Lola Crews; her sister, Mary Catherine Crews-Shepherd; her brother, Jimmie Crews; her daughter, Tammy Yoder; her grandson, Austin Cullison; and her nephews, Dean Shepherd and Billie Shepherd.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Blackburn, and her granddaughter, Amanda Jones.

Those who knew Betty will remember a woman who made room for laughter, kept her heart turned toward the people she loved, and carried an enduring, uplifting light—one that will be missed deeply and remembered with gratitude.
