It is with deep sadness and love that we announce the passing of Gerald Patrick Piper, Sr, known affectionately as "Jerry,” on June 15, 2026. Born on February 2, 1936, in Navasota, TX, Jerry lived a full and vibrant 90 years of life dedicated to family, friends, and community.
Jerry's journey began in Texas, where, after finishing high school, he joined the U.S. Navy. He proudly served his country for four years, stationed in both San Diego, California, and Kingsville, Texas. He served on the aircraft carrier, the USS Wasp. Upon completion of his service, Jerry took on the challenge of running a dairy farm in Piedmont, a gift from his father, where he lived with his family for 13 years. A gifted craftsman he could build most anything. Jerry later immersed himself in the welding industry, teaching the craft at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for a decade. His final calling was in Bastrop, where he settled into retirement with his wife, Virginia. There, Jerry pursued a passion close to his heart by opening a frame shop, following in the footsteps of his father. Jerry found happiness in the simple pleasures of life. His love for country and Cajun music, dancing, hunting, and fishing was well known among family and friends. He spent a lot of time in Matagorda enjoying his beach house, fishing and spending time with family.
Jerry's warmth and friendliness drew people to him naturally; he made lasting friendships wherever he went. He leaves behind a legacy of love, cherished by his wife Virginia Grief; daughter Carol Estes and husband Fred; son Gerald Jr., and his fiancé Tina Karkoska; and stepson Christopher Grief. His legacy continues through his grandchildren Crystal Winkler and husband Shane, Leslie Mills and husband Ryan, Bradley Piper and wife Stephanie, and Hannah Alvarez and husband Patrick, as well as eleven adored great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by his parents, Ardean and Jewel (Arrington) Piper, and his granddaughter Marie Lane, Jerry’s spirit remains within the hearts of those who loved him.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jerry's memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, honoring his life with a gesture that continues to aid others. Jerry's absence is profoundly felt, but those who knew him find solace in the many wonderful memories he leaves behind. Jerry’s family will forever remember his humor, strong work ethic, and the joy he found in a good two-step.
