Charles Edward LaRue, age 75, of Minneapolis, Minnesota passed away in his home on Sunday, June 15, 2025 after an sudden diagnosis. Charles was born to Ruth (née Grob) and Walter LaRue of Appleton, Wisconsin. He was a beloved husband, father, and lifelong educator.
After receiving his Master's Degree from Macalester College, Charles dedicated his entire career to teaching — not just as a profession, but as a calling. His classroom was a place where countless students found not only knowledge, but encouragement and belief in themselves. He was known for his empathy, creativity, and passion. One of Charles' most notable accomplishments was the development of an online program that assisted immigrants across the nation pursue their U.S. citizenship.
Charles' legacy is not only of professional accomplishments and service, but also as a devoted husband. After being introduced by a mutual friend, Charles married Pam, the love of his life in 1985, and became a stepfather to teenagers Clay and Michelle. He embodied what "true love" really meant when he became the loving caretaker of Pam, whose well-being became his most sacred responsibility in recent years after she was diagnosed with dementia. His love was evident not only in his words but in the daily acts of devotion that marked their life together. They were celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary this month.
Outside of work, Charles found joy in the simple things - the quiet of nature and the birds it would bring to his house, the thrill of a good catch, the rhythm of a good song, the love of travel (and a good beignet), and the power of laughter. One of his favorite hang out spots was Crooners Supper Club. Charles was a lover of music and enjoyed seeing bands in a multitude of genres. He found great joy attracting birds to his feeders and had a cartoon-like relationship trying to keep the squirrels away. Charles was often spotted wearing humorous t-shirts and it was not uncommon for him to laugh until he cried. His claim to fame was his collection of hats (although his grandkids say it was the insane amount of tinfoil he used). Most notably, he loved the relaxation and thrill of fishing, but enjoyed it most with his grandchildren.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, integrity, and service. He will be dearly missed by wife, Pam LaRue; step-children, Clay and Michelle Ecklund; grandchildren, Liam and Amelia Austad, Taylor Hackney, Ashley Wozniak; and great-grandchildren Harlow Hackney, Ryker Wozniak; and sister, Lois Huhn.
It was Charles' wishes to be cremated and have his ashes scattered in the woods. A celebration of life will be held in his honor on Saturday, June 28 from 1-5 pm at his home. His presence will be deeply missed, but his influence will live on in the lives of all he taught and loved.
Dear Dad,
Words cannot express the great shock and deep wound I feel since you unexpectedly left on Father's Day. I did not get to celebrate the day with you, but will forever remember the last words I spoke to you that night: "I love you." I hope you know you were not just my stepfather, you were my dad. Your spirit will forever be a part of me, guiding me through life's challenges and reminding me to cherish every moment. I find comfort knowing you are watching over us. You cared for my mom until your body physically could do no more. I wish you would have told me how truly tired you were. You will be remembered with love. Every time I see a yellow bird, I will think of you. The song has ended, but the melody lingers.
